Why Volunteer?
Besides the obvious reason of helping others and your community?
Volunteering can help distinguish you from other candidates when applying to colleges. Many schools have specific GPA and testing requirements, but what have you done above and beyond that to set yourself apart to the admissions office? Volunteering is a great way to show that you care about your community and that you are also capable of managing your time.
Volunteering also gets you involved with events outside of school; you meet new people and are exposed to new ideas. These new friendships could lead to potential recommendation letters in the future or even job offers after college. It is never too early to start building a network of positive people around you.
You will also find that there are many service related scholarships available to high school students. Many of our local organizations who sponsor scholarships each year are looking for students with significant service.
Remember, just like with any extracurricular activity you choose, quality is key. Think of places that you would really like to make a difference and focus on those, build relationships with the people at these organizations and show yourself and others that you can stick with something.

Ronald McDonald House
The Ronald McDonald House Teen Board is comprised of a highly select group of high school students. These teens are chosen based on academics, activities, and commitment to volunteering. Teens must complete an application and provide a teacher recommendation. The commitment is one school year, August through May. There are annual dues of $15 per year.
The expectations of you as a Teen Board member for the year are:
Individual Service to the House: Volunteer for the House at least twenty-five (25) hours each year. This will provide much needed help to our organization as well as help you to truly know how the Ronald McDonald House runs and be familiar with the staff that you will be working with. You will also be required to attend a monthly meeting to be held at the Ronald McDonald House. You will be able to have two (2) unexcused meetings during the year.
In addition to volunteering at the House, we also need for you to become involved in one of the following activities:
. Fundraising: Create a fundraiser that will support the families that stay at the Ronald McDonald House. You will have a better understanding of the continuous financial needs of a non-profit organization.
. Awareness: Participate in an event that will bring awareness of the Ronald McDonald House. This opportunity will give you an understanding of the importance of promoting a positive image of the organization in the community.
. Support: Work on a project such as the wish list, coin drives or other activities to provide support as well as much needed donations that will support the families that stay at the Ronald McDonald House.
The Teen Board will meet every month with at least one representative from The Ronald McDonald House present to observe the meeting. It will be encouraged that the teens rotate positions of leadership, with a different teen being responsible for planning, for running, and for taking notes at each meeting.
