Guide to Paying for College
The NC Residency Determination Service is required for students attending a college or university in North Carolina. Residency is required for you to receive in state tuition (a much lower cost to the student and parents than out of state tuition). Please be sure to have your parents help you with the RDS and read and answer each question carefully.
Click NCRDS to complete.

- September - narrow your list of colleges to no more than 5 to 10. Meet with your school counselor to ask questions about any of them, download the application from the school's site and plan to visit as many of these colleges as possible. Have a calendar that you can use to keep up with important dates, next SAT/ACT test date, early decision deadline for your favorite school, financial aid workshop dates, etc) *** residency determination must be completed to obtain in state tuition from NC colleges and universities. It is best to complete this and the FAFSA at the same time but the residency determination can be completed as early as July. Go to https://ncresidency.cfnc.org/residency/#/RESlogin and use your CFNC username and password to login.
- October - Try to finalize your college choices. Prepare for early decision, early action or rolling admission deadlines as soon as possible. Ask for teacher recommendations. Make sure you are providing a resume to each recommender. This will help them paint a fuller picture of you for the admissions committee. Make sure you have registered for the SAT/ACT by the deadline if you are taking it again.
- Don’t forget FAFSA will be accepting financial aid applications as early as October 1st, so apply early! Go to fafsa.gov to start the application.
- November - Complete at least one college application by Thanksgiving. Be sure to give Ms. Pam your transcript requests early. The policy is 3 business days for all requests.
- December - As you finish and send in your applications and essays, be sure to keep copies.
- January - If you apply to colleges online, be sure to have your high school send a transcript, it goes to colleges separately by mail unless you have completed it through Common App or CFNC.
- February - NO SENIORITIS! Accepting colleges do look at second semester grades.
- March - Keep active in school. If you are wait-listed, the college will want to know what you have accomplished between the time you applied and learned of its decision.
- April - You should receive acceptance letters and financial aid offers by mid-April. If you have not done so yet, visit your final college before accepting. As soon as you decide, notify your counselor of your choice.
- May - College cannot require a deposit or commitment to attend before May 1st. By that post-marked date you must inform every college of your acceptance or rejection of the offer of admission and/or financial aid. Wait listed by a college? If you will enroll if accepted, tell the admissions director your intent and ask how to strengthen your application. Need financial aid? Ask whether funds will be available if you are accepted.
- June - ask us to send a copy of your final transcript to your college!
The Common App essay prompts for 2020/21 are as follows:
1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. 2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? 3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome? 4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution. 5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others. 6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more? 7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design. Familiarize yourself with the Common App website, create an account, this is where you will apply to many of the colleges you are interested in! Common App website link: http://www.commonapp.org/ **Remember if you apply via the Common App you do not have to request a transcript from Mrs. Pam we will be uploading the transcript into your Common App applications. |

If you received certification outside of school, lifeguard CPR for example, please be sure to bring a copy to Student Services.
If you do not have CPR certification we will offer training during 1st and 2nd semester. Check your emails for more information.
